First performance
The inaugural Eurovision song contest of 1956 was a very different place: only seven countries entered, everyone got two goes, and only the winner’s points tally was revealed – the ritual humiliation of the sad-faced Slav in the spangly suit would have to wait. Germany’s first entry, Walter Schwarz’s "Im Wartesaal zum großen Glück" ("In the good luck waiting room"), didn’t scoop top honours, but did comfortably win the evening’s Most Tortuous Metaphor prize.
