Hermann Hesse
Hesse is one of the top selling German authors of all time, and with meaty tomes such as Damien, Steppenwolf and Death and the Lover to his name, this is no surprise. Hesse, born in 1877 in Calw, Baden-Wurttemberg, had a rocky personal life dominated by unhappy marriages and war before he eventually settled in Switzerland and died alone in 1962.
